Women's Volleyball Defeats Houghton, 3-0

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore middle blocker Kiersten Colvin notched a career-high 11 kills and a .556 hitting percentage to lead the Knights to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) victory over visiting Houghton, Tuesday night. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Geneseo broke a 5-5 first-set tie to take a 10-6 lead that later grew to 16-9 during a 4-1 run that included a pair of kills by sophomore middle blocker Bridget Lougen. Houghton pulled back within four, 17-13, but the Knights closed the set on an 8-3 run, including two kills by first-year outside hitter Maddie McLaughlin
  • The Highlanders erased an early 11-6 deficit in the second set with four-straight points to pull within one, 11-10. However, Geneseo used a 7-0 run on the serve of first-year defensive specialist Morgan Michalski to take an 18-10 lead that proved insurmountable. 
  • Tied, 15-15, in the third set, the Knights used a 9-1 run that included a pair of Colvin kills to put the match away. 

MATCH NOTES 

  • Geneseo (15-6) is undefeated in its last five outings and is 9-1 in its last 10. 
  • McLaughlin finished with 11 kills on 21 swings en route to a .429 hitting percentage. 
  • Junior outside hitter Abby May finished a kill short of a double-double with nine kills and 15 digs. 
  • Junior libero Sam Mendelsohn was credited with 15 digs while sophomore outside hitter Alexndra Frank added 12 digs. 
  • Geneseo attacked at a .276 clip for its third-highest hitting percentage of the season (.287 vs. Keuka Sept. 1, .282 vs. Coast Guard Sept. 1).
  • Geneseo raised over $2,000 during its inaugural "Dig Pink" night, with proceeds benefiting the Side Out Foundation for cancer research. 

WHAT'S NEXT 

Geneseo will travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Clark on Friday (6:00 p.m.) before taking on host Wellesley (9:00 AM) and Plymouth State (11:00 AM) in tri-match action on Saturday.
