No. 8/9 Men's Ice Hockey Takes Down Fredonia, 4-1

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Andrew Romano notched a goal and an assist while sophomore forward Tyson Empey was credited with three assists to lead the No. 8/9 Knights to a 4-1 victory over visiting Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey action, Saturday.

Junior goalie Devin McDonald totaled 34 saves, including 14 in the second period, as Geneseo improved to 4-0-1 in its last five outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Geneseo (12-4-2, 7-2-2 SUNYAC) got on the board 53 seconds into the game after junior forward Anthony Marra flipped a shot on goal from behind the left post that deflected off Blue Devil sophomore goalie Anton Rosen's back into the goal.
  • With 7:18 on the clock, first-year forward Gordon Helmuth dropped a pass on the left wing just over the blue line where senior defenseman Pat Condon scored on a long-range blast inside the right post to give the Knights a 2-0 lead they carried into the first intermission.
  • Sophomore forward Conlan Keenan gave the Knights a 3-0 lead after cleaning up a rebound in front of a crowded Blue Devil crease for a power-play tally with 12:37 left in the second period
  • Fredonia (8-6-3, 4-4-0 SUNYAC) answered with a power-play goal of their own four minutes later on a wrist shot by senior forward Sam Wilbur from inside the right face-off circle.
  • Geneseo hit the second intermission leading 4-1 after Romano converted a power-play tally on a rebound from close range with 1:47 on the clock for what proved to be the final tally of the game.

QUICK FACTS

  • Geneseo avenged a 4-3 setback to the host Blue Devils (Nov. 4) that saw Fredonia comeback from a two-goal deficit over the final two periods.
  • The Knights moved one point ahead of Oswego to re-take first place in the SUNYAC standings.  The Lakers (12-3-2, 7-0-1 SUNYAC) skated to a 3-3 non-league tie at Utica in other action Saturday night.
  • McDonald improved to 11-2-2 this winter and has only allowed five goals in his four most recent starts while compiling a .950 save percentage.

WHAT'S NEXT

Geneseo closes the month with a pair of road games, traveling to Potsdam on Friday (Jan.26) before heading to Plattsburgh on Saturday (Jan. 27). Both games are slated for 7:00 p.m. face-offs.
