Women's Volleyball Takes Down Nazareth At Vassar

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore outside hitter Grace Cergol was credited with 17 kills and 14 digs while sophomore outside hitter Abby May added 13 kills and 11 digs to lead the Knights to a 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Nazareth, Friday, in a match played at Vassar's Kenyon Hall.

Geneseo (12-4) is now unbeaten in its last nine matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Geneseo fell behind, 13-5, in the first set, but recovered with an 11-3 run to close within three, 19-16. However, the Golden Flyers (10-5) scored six of the final nine points to clinch the opening win.
  • The Knights bounced back to take a tight second set. Tied seven times in the early going, Geneseo scored a 7-0 run, including a pair of service aces by May, to turn a 13-12 deficit into a 19-13 edge. Nazareth responded with an 9-2 spurt of its own to re-take a 22-21 lead, but a Cergol kill highlighed four-unanswered Knights' points to knot the match.
  • Geneseo broke a 4-4 tie in the third set with an 11-5 run to lead, 15-9. The Knights' lead grew to eight, 19-11, as Geneseo moved on to the 2-1 lead.
  • In the fourth, Geneseo  opened a 10-4 lead, but Nazareth came back within two, 11-9. The Knights' lead grew back to six, 19-13, before a final Cergol strike later closed the five-point win to clinch the match.
