No. 21 Women's Basketball Pulls Away at Brockport For 64-51 Victory

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Kelsey Poplawski scored eight of her 11 points in a third-quarter rally to help SUNY Geneseo pull away from State University of New York Athletic Conference foe Brockport on its way to a 64-51 win.

Senior guard Kara Houppert led the way with a game-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Knights. Senior wing Kayleigh Cavanaugh scored nine points while senior guard Katie Durand and senior forward Bridgit Ryan scored seven apiece.

The Knights shot 38.6% (24-for-63) from the floor on the night but tied a season-high with 12 three-pointers on the evening, shooting a season-best 57.1% (12-for-21) from behind the arc. Houppert and Poplawski drilled three each while Cavanaugh and first-year guard Sara Ciotti netted two triples each. Ryan and first-year guard Madison McCulley added the other two threes.

A balanced attack carried Geneseo through the first half as eight players got on the scoreboard to keep the Knights ahead of the Golden Eagles. The squad took a 32-26 lead into the break at halftime.

In the third quarter, Geneseo finally began to pull away from the home team. Poplawski netted eight straight points for the Knights to spur a 17-2 run over the final 6:15 of the third quarter, giving the visitors a 54-33 lead entering the final frame.

The Golden Eagles did all they could to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knights 18-10, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. Houppert drilled two clutch three-pointers in the fourth to keep Geneseo out in front as the team maintained its undefeated mark with a 64-51 win.

The Knights will continue their five-game road trip with a voyage to Oneonta on Friday, Feb. 10 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. A win against the Red Dragons would secure Geneseo a first-place finish in the SUNYAC regular season and the right to host the conference tournament.
