No. 7/8 Men's Ice Hockey Shoots Past Stevenson, 6-2

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo first-year defenseman Cam Russell (1G, 2A) and first-year forward Andrew Romano (3A) led all players with three points each as the No. 7/8 Knights defeated visiting Stevenson, 6-2, in a non-conference matinee, Saturday at Wilson Ice Arena.

Russell was one of six Geneseo (11-2-2) players to score goals in the team's 11th win of the season. First-year forwards Tyson Empey (1G, 1A) and David Szmyd (2A) both tallied two points on the afternoon. Also scoring for the Knights were first-year forward Conlan Keenan, sophomore forward Anthony Marra and senior forwards Trevor Hills and Jack Ceglarski. The Knights out-shot Stevenson, 45-16n for the game.

Russell's goal opened the scoring, as the Knights took advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity with 2:45 remaining in the first period. Geneseo's 1-0 edge stood at the first intermission.

Stevenson (8-6-2) evened the score early in the second period on Colin Woods' power-play goal with 17:30 on the clock. Geneseo retaliated with five unanswered goals, spanning the second and third periods, to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.

Empey's second goal of the season with 8:03 on the second-period clock gave the Knights the lead for good, as he tipped in a pass from Russell in front the Stevenson goal. Just over one minute later, Keenan scored after crisp passing from Romano and Szmyd led to a nice chance in front that he put home to notch his team-high 15th goal of the year. Marra later deflected a long pass from senior defenseman Derek Stahl past Stevenson goalkeeper Jacob Caffrey with just over eight minutes to play in the second, and the Knights took a 4-1 lead after two periods of action.

Goals from both Hills and Ceglarski early in the third put Geneseo on top, 6-1, before Stevenson's Austin Swingle beat Geneseo senior goalie Devin McDonald on the power play in what would be the final goal of the game.

McDonald finished the day with 14 saves, 11 of which came in the final 20 minutes. Caffrey made 32 saves in nearly 50 minutes of work before Pierce Dushenko took over in goal for the Mustangs for the final 10:36. Dushenko was credited with seven saves.

Geneseo returns to the ice at Cortland on Friday, January 20, at 7:00 p.m.
