Women's Basketball Advances To NCAA Second Round With 51-45 Win Over FDU-Florham

HOBOKEN, N.J. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Katie Vienneau scored a game-high 13 points off the bench while senior forward Allison McKenna recorded a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 51-45 victory over FDU-Florham in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, hosted by Stevens Institute (N.J.), Friday night.

Geneseo (21-7) advances to the second round of the tournament for the second-straight season and seventh time overall (3-3). The Knights will face the winner of tonight's other first-round match-up between the host Ducks and Old Westbury on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Junior guard Kara Houppert had 12 points and nine rebounds while senior guard Dana Cohan added five points and five assists in the win. The Devils finish the season with a 21-7 record as senior forward Shalette Brown notched 11 points and 17 rebounds and junior forward Alyssa McDonough also scored 11 points.

Holding an 11-8 edge with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter, Vienneau scored three-straight points to give the Knights a six-point lead, 14-8, at 1:25. Junior center Rachel Groom made a lay-up with 15 seconds remaining to cut FDU-Florham's deficit to four, 14-10, heading into the second quarter.

FDU-Florham opened the second quarter with five-straight points to take back the lead, 15-14, at 8:27. Geneseo responded with a 19-4 run to go ahead by 16 and take a 34-18 advantage into halftime. The run was capped by a three-point field goal by Houppert.

The Devils outscored the Knights, 16-5, in the third quarter to cut their deficit to five, 39-34, heading into the final quarter. Leading by nine, 45-36, at 6:28 in the fourth quarter after a made lay-up by Vienneau, FDU-Florham scored four straight to cut Geneseo's lead back down to five, 45-40, at 5:38.

The Knights remained strong defensively down the stretch, limiting the Devils to just five points and two-of-seven shooting to hold on for the win.
