Women's Basketball Comes Up Short To Brockport, 66-64

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Katie Vienneau scored a team-high 18 points while junior guard Katie Durand added 15 points, but it was visiting Brockport hitting the game-winning basket as the final horn sounded to escape with the 66-64 victory, Friday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball action. The loss snapped a seven-game winning-streak for Geneseo (14-5, 9-3 SUNYAC).

Brockport (12-7, 8-4 SUNYAC) first-year guard Hannah Spencer finished with four points, but her running jumper as time expired proved to be the game-winner. Senior forward Olivia Suhr led all scorers with 21 points.

A Viennau lay-up with 5:00 left in regulation posted the Knights to a 60-51 lead. However, The Golden Eagles used a decisive 11-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by junior guard Faith Welch from the top-right corner, to take a two-point lead with 1:25 remaining.

Vienneau drew a foul on the ensuing possession and hit a pair of free throws to knot the game, 62-62, with 1:04 on the clock, but Suhr responded with a tough lay-up in traffic at the other end to put Brockport back on top with 48 seconds to play.

Durand answered with a driving lay-up nine seconds later to make it a 64-64 contest with 39 seconds on the clock. Following a Brockport timeout, Welch mis-fired from the top-left corner on a three-point attempt to give the Knights the ball back. However, the Knights turned the ball over with six seconds on the clock, setting up the final Golden Eagles' possession.

Spencer got the ball at mid court on the right wing and dribbled up court with the final seconds ticking away. Taking off just to the right of the free-throw line, she got a shot off just as the buzzer sounded that rattled home to seal the win.

In the first half, Geneseo turned a 9-8 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter into a 18-11 edge at the end of the first quarter. A rebound and put-back by first-year forward McKenna Brooks posted the Knights to their largest lead, 22-11, with 8:04 remaining in the half.

Brockport trailed, 24-15, with 5:07 on the clock but a jumper by Olivia Suhr kicked off a 12-3 run to knot the score, 27-27 at intermission.

Geneseo re-took control during a high-scoring third quarter, building a 51-44 heading into the final stanza.

The Knight are back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 9), hosting Buffalo State at 5:30 p.m.
