Women's Basketball Advances To SUNYAC Championship With 71-41 Win Over Fredonia

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Allison McKenna totaled 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the second-seeded Knights over third-seeded Fredonia, 71-41, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Semifinals, Friday.

Geneseo advances to play host and top-seeded New Paltz in the SUNYAC Championship game Saturday at 4 p.m. The Hawks defeated fifth-seeded Oneonta, 77-68, to earn a trip to the finals. This is the team's fourth-straight appearance, and fifth in the last six years, in the conference title game. The Knights own a 5-5 all-time record in the finals and will look to capture their second-straight and sixth overall SUNYAC Championship tomorrow afternoon.

Senior guard Dana Cohan had 12 points and seven assists while junior guard Kara Houppert added eight points and four rebounds in the win. Junior guard Alexis Cheatham led the Blue Devils (19-8) with 11 points as senior forward Sabrina Macaulay tallied eight points and 10 rebounds.

Geneseo opened the game with a 9-0 run and held an 11-2 lead at 5:40 in the first quarter. Ahead, 22-13, at 7:11 in the second quarter, the Knights went on a 10-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the half, 32-13, with 4:26 on the clock. Fredonia notched eight of the final 12 points of the quarter to cut its deficit to 15, 36-21, at halftime.

At 5:39 in the third quarter, senior forward Lea Sobieraski hit a jumper to cap a 10-1 run out of the break and give Geneseo a 46-22 lead. Sobieraski finished the night with eight points. The Knights limited the Blue Devils to just six points in the third quarter and took a 56-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

Geneseo kept the game out of reach for the final fifteen minutes, holding Fredonia to its lowest scoring output of the season and a 23-percent field-goal percentage. The Knights finished with a 47-34 rebounding advantage to record their third victory against the Blue Devils this season.
