No. 11/12 Men's Ice Hockey Moves Past Potsdam, 4-1, In SUNYAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Genseo first-year goalie Devin McDonald was credited with a career-high 44 saves to lead the No. 11/12 Knights to a 4-1 victory over Potsdam in the quarterfinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

Four Knights scored a goal as third-seeded Geneseo (16-4-6) jumped out to a 4-0 second-period lead en route to advancing to play second-seeded Buffalo State in the semifinals on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 7:00 p.m. in Buffalo.

Junior forward RJ Burns opened the scoring with 8:22 on the clock after collecting a rebound in front of the Bears' crease and tucking a short back-hander inside the right post. Just over two minutes later, senior defenseman Matt Solomon scored on a low slap shot from the top-left corner of the zone that made its way through a crowd and deflected into the net off sophomore goalie Brendan McMenimen's pads for the 2-0 lead at 6:21.

Sophomore defenseman Pat Condon made it a 3-0 lead 32 seconds into the second period after his shot from the left face-off circle found the net before senior forward David Ripple made it a 4-Geneseo advantage after taking a cross-ice feed from first-year forward Brodie Tutton and scoring on a rising shot from the center of the right face-off circle at 10:57.

Potsdam (11-11-4) got on the board with 7:10 remaining in regulation after junior forward Logan Brown finished off a rush in front of McDonald from close range.

The Bears out-shot the Knights, 45-38, but McDonald, who was named a third-team SUNYAC All-Star on Tuesday, was able to eclipse the 41-save effort he posted in Geneseo's 5-5 tie opposite visiting Neumann (Jan. 15) and earn his 13th victory of the season.

Saturday's contest will mark the fourth time in the last six years Geneseo has played in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals. In the two teams' last postseason meeting, the Knights defeated visiting Buffalo State, 2-0, in the 2014 semifinals during their run to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four.
