Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior guard Katie Durand scored 12 points while senior forward Lea Sobieraski added 10 points to lead the Knights to a 56-46 victory over visiting Plattsburgh in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball, Saturday.
Geneseo (19-6, 14-4 SUNYAC) led, 10-8, after the first quarter, but Plattsburgh (14-11, 8-10 SUNYAC) used a 9-3 outburst to take a 17-13 lead at 7:25. Trailing, 19-15, Geneseo responded with a 10-0 run, including four points by Durand, to take a 25-19 lead en route to a 28-21 edge at halftime that included a last-second three-pointer by senior guard Dana Cohan.
The Knights took their largest lead, 35-26, on a put-back by first-year forward McKenna Brooks at 5:14, but Plattsburgh closed to within two, 37-35, at 2:41. Back-to-back baskets by Sobieraski yielded a 41-35 Geneseo lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Plattsburgh started the final stanza on an 8-0 run, including a three-pointer and a tough lay-up for a three-point play by Stephanie Linder, to take a 43-41 lead with 6:10 on the clock. However, six-straight points by senior forward Allison McKenna started an 11-0 run as Geneseo finished the game out-scoring the visitors, 15-3, to seal the win.
Geneseo out-rebounded the Cardinals, 39-28, while totaling a 16-0 advantage in second-chance points.
The Knights' five seniors were honored in a brief ceremony prior to the game, including Sobieraski, McKenna, Cohan, forward Vanessa Wyckoff and guard Kelsey Annese.
Already assured of the No. 2 seed for next week's SUNYAC Tournament, the Knights await the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal game between third-seeded Fredonia and sixth-seeded Brockport on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Top-seeded New Paltz will host Friday's two semifinal games as well as Saturday's championship game with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
