Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Stephen Collins scored the game-winning goal with 41.3 seconds left in overtime after also assisting junior forward Trevor Hills' game-tying goal with 48.9 seconds left in regulation to lead the No. 11/12 Knights back for a 4-3 victory over visiting Fredonia, Saturday night, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey.
With 1:44 left in regulation, Fredonia was whistled for a tripping penalty that set up a power-play opportunity for Geneseo. Skating 6-on-4 after pulling first-year goalie Devin McDonald, Collins sent a pass across the high slot where Hills rifled a shot from just inside the right face-off dot into the upper-right corner of the Blue Devil net for the equalizer.
With 3:23 remaining in overtime, Geneseo was whistled for having too many players on the ice, but a diving save by McDonald on a wide open right post helped the Knights survive the penalty. Forty-two seconds later, Collins got open and collected a pass from senior defenseman Matt Solomon at the top of the slot. Moving to his left, Collins slowly headed low toward the goal, handling the puck for a couple brief moments before unleashing a wrist shot inside the top left corner for the deciding tally.
Hills put the Knights on the board with 13:22 left in the first period after collecting a rebound in the low slot after a saved shot by sophomore defenseman Pat Condon and tapping home his 17th goal of the season inside the right post. Fredonia first-year forward Todd Shauss evened the score with 4:07 left in the period after scoring off a rebound of his own to send the game to the first intermission tied, 1-1.
Fredonia took a 2-1 lead after junior forward Hunter long took a shot that McDonald chested down in front of the goal mouth. McDonald lunged forward to try to make a play on the loose puck but junior forward Marcus Ortiz beat him to the punch and scored into the open net with 13:31 in the period.
Condon evened the score with 2:17 on the clock with a low, long shot from the right wing that made it through traffic in front of the Blue Devils' cage and scored inside the right post as the teams headed to the third tied, 2-2.
Fredonia retook the lead with 5:23 left in regulation. Schauss took a slap shot that McDonald deflected to his right, but sophomore forward Samuel Wilbur knocked a loose puck out of the air and behind McDonald for the go-ahead tally, setting up the decisive final stretch.
McDonald was credited with 23 saves to improve to 11-2-4 on the season, while Fredonia senior Jeff Flagler totaled 43 stops on the night.
Geneseo honored the seven members of the Class of 2016 in a brief ceremony during the first intermission, including Solomon and classmates Nate Brown, Ryan Donnelly, Dennis Playfair, David Ripple and AJ Sgaraglio. A memorial to senior Matt Hutchinson was also unveiled as part of the ceremony.
Already assured of a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament, the Knights can clinch the second seed with a pair of victories in its final two games of the regular season. Geneseo will take on host Potsdam this Friday (Feb. 19) and host Plattsburgh on Saturday (Feb. 20). Both games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
