Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Sotiris Athanasopoulos scored the game-tying goal with 3:53 left in regulation to help bring the Knights back from a two-goal deficit en route to a 4-4 draw with Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey, Friday.
Geneseo 12-3-4, 6-1-3 SUNYAC) saw the Mustangs (5-12-2, 1-9-1 SUNYAC) jump out to an early 2-0 lead with 10:42 left in the first period. Junior defenseman Joe Ftoma picked off a Geneseo pass during a Knights' power play and beat first-year goalie Devin McDonald on a one-on-one break with a flip into the upper-right corner of the goal for a short-handed tally at 12:53. Just over two minutes later, the Mustangs broke out for a rush on the Geneseo goal that saw first-year forward Brett Johnson take a pass across the crease and finish inside a wide-open right post
The Knights got on the board with 5:10 on the first-period clock after senior forward David Ripple stuffed a short rebound inside the right post of the Morrisville cage. With one minute showing on the clock, senior defenseman Matt Solomon took a short pass from junior forward Jack Ceglarski across the low slot and tapped home a shot inside the right post to knot the game, 2-2, after 20 minutes of play.
Morrisville re-took a two-goal edge with a pair of unanswered goals in the second period. First-year defenseman Mike Giacometti tallied the first only 36 seconds into the period before junior forward Darren Young scored off a cross into the right side of the net from close range with 14:57 on the clock.
The teams remained tied until the 9:51 mark of the third period when first-year forward Zach Lynes scored on a short rebound inside the left post for his first collegiate goal to pull the hosts within one. Geneseo netted the equalizer 5:58 later after a long shot from the point by junior defenseman Derek Stahl was deflected down by Morrisville sophomore goalie Steven Dombrosky to Athanasopoulos, who knocked the loose puck in from short range.
McDonald totaled 24 saves while Dombrosky made 31 as Geneseo out-shot the Mustangs, 35-28.
The two teams will face-off again on Saturday, traveling to Morrisville for the 7:00 p.m. start.
