Men's Basketball Pulls Out 60-58 Victory At Brockport

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - SUNY Genseseo junior guard John Decker scored a game-high 23 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with six seconds remaining in regulation, to lead the Knights to a 60-58 victory at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball play.

Junior guard Justin Ringen was held to 10 points on the night, snapping a five-game streak of scoring at least 20 points. Sophomore guard Kevin Crockett added nine points while senior guard Connor Keenan was the Knights' top rebounder with seven.

"Justin struggled tonight, but give Brockport credit for doing a good job containing him," said head coach Steve Minton. "We had some other guys step up while we also did a good job of mixing up our defenses and executed well down the stretch.

The teams played a tight first half until Brockport broke a 20-20 tie with nine-unanswered points to take a 29-20 lead with 3:44 on the clock on its way to a 31-24 edge at halftime.

Geneseo trailed until a Ringen lay-up staked the Knights to a 40-39 lead with 11:55 to play in regulation. A 9-2 Golden Eagles' run put the hosts up by six, 48-42, with 7:29 to play, but seven-unanswered Geneseo points, including a Decker long-ball followed by a lay-up by first-year guard CJ Burke put the Knights back on top, 49-48, with 5:56 remaining.

A Crockett three-pointer and a pair of Ringen free-throws built the Geneseo lead to four, 54-50, but Brockport again answered with a 5-0 spurt to lead by one with 2:44 left in regulation. A lay-up by Ringen at 1:58 and one of two free throws by Burke put the Knights back on top, 57-55, at 1:13, but a lay-up by Brockport senior guard Clifton Lyerly re-tied the game, 57-57, with 14 seconds on the clock.

On the ensuing possession, Decker connected on what proved to be the winning strike from long range as the Knights held on for the victory.

Geneseo returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Oswego at 7:30 p.m. to kick-off a three-game homestand.
