Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Anthony Marra scored two goals while junior forward Stephen Collins handed out three assists to lead the No. 12 Knights to a 6-1 victory over visiting Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey action, Saturday night.
In front of a sold out Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena, Geneseo (11-3-3, 5-1-2 SUNYAC) held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. Junior forward Trevor Hills put the Knights on the board with top shelf goal off a rebound at 6:38. The tally was assisted by Collins and junior defenseman Derek Stahl.
With 17:41 on the clock in the second period, senior defender Matt Solomon notched a short-handed goal into the left half of the net on a breakaway to make it a 2-0 game. At 12:53, Red Dragons' (7-8-3, 1-6-2 SUNYAC) sophomore forward Dan Broderik scored on a power-play to cut the deficit to one. Just 1:43 later, Marra responded with a goal off a missed shot by Collins to make it 3-1.
At the 9:48 mark in the second period, Marra puts the hosts up 4-1 after he registered his second tally of the game during a Geneseo powerplay. Marra scored into the top shelf from the left side off assists from Collins and senior forward David Ripple.
The Knights tacked on two more goals in the third period to secure the conference win. At 11:55, junior forward RJ Burns knocked in a goal following a face-off win to give Geneseo a 5-1 lead. With four minutes remaining, sophomore forward Sotiris Athanasopoulos scored the team's sixth goal on a powerplay off assists from Solomon and junior forward Jack Ceglarski.
First-year goalie Devin McDonald recorded 26 saves to preserve his ninth win of the season.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Oswego. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
