Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Genseo senior forward Allison McKenna tallied 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Knights to a 63-57 victory over Misericordia in their home-opener, Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard Dana Cohan and junior guard Kara Houppert each added 10 points and six rebounds in the win while first-year McKenna Brooks had seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
At 4:35 in the first quarter, junior guard Katie Durand made a jumper to put the hosts up five, 14-9. The Cougars responded by going on a 6-0 run to take a 15-14 lead at 2:31. Back-to-back buckets by the Knights in the final 1:18 made it 18-15 at the end of the period.
With 7:27 on the clock in the second quarter, Houppert completed a three-point play to put Geneseo up, 27-21. At 4:29, first-year forward Rachel Carmody made a lay-up to cap another 6-0 spurt by Misericordia, tying the game at 27. Trailing, 35-31, junior forward Katie Vienneau made a lay-up with 20 seconds remaining to cut the Knights' deficit to two, 35-33, heading into halftime.
Geneseo opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 42-38 lead at 5:12. Following a three by Houppert, junior forward Justine Seely scored a lay-up for the Cougars (3-9) to tie the game at 45 with 2:03 on the clock. Both teams scored once more in the final minutes to make it 47-47 at the end of the third quarter.
At 7:56 in the fourth quarter, a three-point play by Brooks gave the Knights a three-point edge, 50-47. After a Seely lay-up at 3:04 cut the lead to one, 56-55, Geneseo closed the game with a 7-2 run to seal the victory.
The Knights (5-2) begin State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action this Tuesday at home opposite Fredonia. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
