Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Allison McKenna registered 15 points and 13 rebounds while junior forward Katie Vienneau added 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Knights past host Buffalo State, 63-52, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball play, Saturday.
Head coach Scott Hemer was credited with his 300th career coaching victory as senior guard Dana Cohan tallied eight points and three assists and junior guard Kara Houppert had nine rebounds and six assists in the victory.
"Reaching 300 career coaching wins is just more of an indication that I've had the privilege to work with some amazing student-athletes who have been committed to excellence and assistant coaches who have been dedicated to making us successful," said Hemer. "The milestone is nice but it's truly more about all those people who were a part of getting us there."
Leading 11-10 at 3:02 in the first quarter, Vienneau tallied six-consecutive points to give Geneseo a 17-13 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Knights opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 10-point lead, 25-15, at 7:31. Ahead 28-22 with 3:09 on the clock, senior guard Kelsey Annese completed a three-point play to make it 31-22 as Geneseo maintained a double-digit lead into halftime, 36-25.
At 4:56 in the third quarter, senior guard Britt Perry made a jumper to bring the Bengals within four, 43-39, but junior guard Kayleigh Cavanaugh responded with a score from beyond the arc in the Knights' next possession. With 1:27 remaining in the quarter, senior guard Clarisa Matias, who led Buffalo State with 15 points, made two free-throws to make it a five-point game, 48-43, heading into the fourth quarter.
Geneseo scored 12 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 60-43, at 4:04 in the fourth quarter as the Knights held the Bengals (6-8, 2-5 SUNYAC) to just nine points in the final period of play.
"It's difficult to go on the road and play in a much different environment on back-to-back nights," adds Hemer. "I'm proud of the team for finding ways to overcome some challenges and capture two wins this weekend."
Geneseo (9-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) continues conference play Tuesday, Jan. 19, at home opposite Cortland. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
