Box Score FREDONIA, N.Y. - Junior forward Katie Vienneau tallied a game-high 16 points off the bench to lead the Knights to a 58-46 victory at Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Friday evening.
Junior guard Kara Houppert had eight points, five rebounds and four assists while senior guard Dana Cohan added seven points and five assists and junior guard Katie Durand grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.
Trailing by two, 13-11, with 1:35 left in the first quarter, first-year forward Nicole Kaczmarczyk scored a lay-up to tie the game. The Blue Devils made a free-throw with 23 seconds remaining to hold a one-point edge, 14-13, at the end of the quarter.
After a three-pointer by first-year forward Sarah Sweazy put Fredonia up by five, 19-14, at 6:37 in the second quarter, Geneseo went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-20 lead at 2:12. With 1:44 on the clock, senior forward Lea Sobieraski made it 23-22 with a jumper, but the Blue Devils recorded two free-throws at 1:02 to take a 24-23 lead into halftime.
The Knights opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run, which was capped by a Vienneau lay-up, to go up by seven, 33-26, at 3:16. Fredonia (9-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) cut its deficit to three, 37-34, with 26 seconds remaining in the quarter but a made jumper by Sobieraski as time expired gave Geneseo a 39-34 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Leading by just four, 44-40, at 6:24, the Knights went on an 11-4 run to take a 55-44 lead with 2:42 left in the game. Senior forward Allison McKenna, who finished with seven points, seven rebounds and four blocks, made a lay-up and a free-throw down the stretch to secure the 12-point victory for Geneseo.
The Knights (8-4, 3-2 SUNYAC) return to action tomorrow at Buffalo State for a 2 p.m. match-up.
