Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Katie Vienneau led the Knights with 14 points but it was host Cortland taking the 57-56 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, Tuesday.
Senior Dana Cohan tallied 12 points and four rebounds while senior forward Allison McKenna added six points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Red Dragons' junior guard Jennifer Deuel led all scorers with 17 points.
Trailing 12-7 at 1:18 in the first quarter, first-year forward Nicole Kaczmarczyk notched three-consecutive free throws to cut Geneseo's deficit to two, 12-10, with 59 seconds remaining. However, a three by Cortland junior guard Cassidy Chapko in the following possession gave the hosts a 15-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
At 6:43 in the second quarter, junior guard Kara Houppert scored from long range to put the Knights up by one, 18-17. The Red Dragons responded with a 7-2 spurt to take back the lead, 24-20, at 3:20. Geneseo scored eight unanswered, including three made free throws by Cohan with no time on the clock, to take a four-point edge into halftime, 28-24.
Ahead by two, 33-31, with 8:05 to play in the third quarter, the Knights went on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 42-31, at 4:17. Cortland scored nine of the final 11 points of the quarter to cut Geneseo's lead to four, 44-40, heading into the final period.
With 8:42 on the clock in the fourth quarter, junior guard Katie Durand scored a three to extend the Knights' lead to nine, 49-40. The Red Dragons answered with a 12-4 run to come within one, 53-52, at 4:46.
At 1:19, a Chapko three-pointer gave Cortland (8-3, 3-1 SUNYAC) its first lead of the second half, 57-56. Neither team was able to add to the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as Durand's three-pointer in the final seconds was blocked and the Red Dragons secured the rebound to hold on for the win.
Geneseo (7-4, 2-2 SUNYAC) returns to action this Friday, Jan. 15, at Fredonia. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
