Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Ethan Gunty and senior back Brad Campion each notched first-half goals as the Knights picked up a 3-0 victory over visiting Fredonia in the teams' State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's soccer opener, Friday.
Geneseo (4-1-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) got on the board in the seventh minute as first-year forward Austin DeRidder looped a free kick from the right wing into the Blue Devil goal box where Gunty finished a close-range shot inside the left post.
In the 28th minute, senior back Terence McGovern dropped a free kick from five yards inside the left corner into the goal box where Campion was able to get the ball to his feet and finish inside the left post.
Geneseo senior midfielder Stanley Egbuchulam tacked on a goal in the 74th minute, receiving a long pass from sophomore midfielder Reidis Lata up the right wing and out-running the Fredonia defense to best first-year Blue Devil goalkeeper Noah Voss on a one-on-one attempt.
Fredonia put together numerous strong scoring attempts, including two in the first half. Three minutes before Campion's goal, the Blue Devils appeared to have scored on a well-executed set piece from 20 yards out following a Geneseo foul, but a Fredonia player was ruled offside.
Knights senior goalkeeper Logan Calvey was credited with six saves, including five in the first half to preserve his third shutout of the season.
Geneseo returns to action on Saturday, hosting Buffalo State at 1:00 p.m. in SUNYAC play.
