Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Sarah Malinak scored two goals while first-year forward Gabriella Clare notched a goal and an assist to lead the Knights to a 4-1 victory over Elmira in their season-opener, Tuesday night, at College Stadium.
"I thought our performance tonight was a good way to start the season," said Geneseo head coach Jess Seren. "While there are definitely some areas we could have played better, we were able to take care of business and get the win."
Geneseo (1-0) got on the board in the 14th minute as Clare took a pass from sophomore midfielder Giovanna Fasanello and scored from short range in front of the Soaring Eagle (0-2) cage.
Just over two minutes later, Malinak got into the action by tipping home a short shot after Clare intercepted an Elmira pass and fed her with a long pass just in front of the Elmira goal.
Four minutes into the second period, Malinak scored on a drive from the middle of the circle to stake Geneseo to a 3-0 leadl.
Sophomore forward Molly Higgins cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Elmira cage with a shot inside the left post with under three minutes to play to close the Knights' scoring.
Elmira avoided the shutout with 1:02 left in the game, as senior forward Alli Gilbert scored on a short shot inside the right post.
Senior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer picked up her first win of the season notching three saves to preserve the victory. Soaring Eagle junior keeper Mikayla Rebusmen was stout in goal, logging 16 saves in the loss.
Geneseo returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 6) with a trip to Rensselaer for a 12:00 p.m. face-off with the Engineers.
