Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Giovanna Fasanello scored two goals to lead the Knights to a 8-0 shutout of visiting Morrisville in both teams' State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey opener, Saturday, at College Stadium.
Geneseo (3-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) took a 6-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of play and never looked back, tacking on two more tallies in the second half. Fasanello got the Knights going early with back-to back goals 11 seconds apart, finishing off a penalty corner 1:26 into the contest before taking a cross from senior midfielder Elena Hingston and burying a shot inside the left post.
Sophomore midfielder Cara Stafford scored on a hard shot inside the left post, before first-year forward Maria Dillingham lifted a close-range shot into the upper left corner of the Morrisville cage 34 seconds later for her first collegiate goal that made it a 4-0 game 5:46 into the contest.
Sophomore midfielder Morgan Maley took a Dillingham feed through traffic and scored on a drive inside the left post at the 11:11 mark, while first-year defender Lydia Volpe swept a shot into the Mustang cage off a pass from first-year midfielder Tess Necaise for her first tally in a Geneseo uniform at 17:21 to stake the Knights to a six-goal lead.
Geneseo scored twice in the final six minute of regulation as junior defender Liz Doherty punched home a tally at 60:43 before junior midfielder Clara Bates notched her first-career goal after scoring on a short shot through a crowd at 64:54.
Senior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer (1 save) and first-year Hanna Sweet (4 saves) split time in the Knights' cage to combine for the shutout.
Geneseo kicks off a five-match road trip on Wednesday, traveling to Hamilton for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
