Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Ethan Gunty recorded his first goal in a Knights' uniform to lead the hosts to a 1-0 victory over No. 20 Rochester in both teams' season-opener, Tuesday. The victory came in front of over 1,500 fans and supporters that were celebrating the Grand Opening of Geneseo's new College Stadium complex.
In the 21st minute, Gunty broke free behind a Rochester defender after collecting a pass from junior midfielder Matt D'Amico and dribbled into the penalty box where he scored on a low bouncing shot into the right side of the net.
The Knights had an opportunity to extend its lead in the 68th minute after a Rochester foul set up a free-kick just outside the Yellowjacket penalty box. The ensuing free kick by sophomore midfielder Kai Meredith deflected off the cross bar where senior back Terence McGovern headed a rebound that sailed just right of the net.
While the visitors finished the match with and 8-7 edge in shots, Geneseo held Rochester (0-1) to just two attempts for the remainder of the game as senior goalkeeper Logan Calvey finished the night with five saves to preserve the shutout.
Geneseo (1-0) will next take on Hiram on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the first-round of the Herb-Lauffer Memorial Tournament, hosted by PSU-Behrend.
