Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis totaled 20 points and 16 rebounds but it was defending national champion FDU-Florham (N.J.) taking a 68-54 victory in the NCAA Division III Tournament Sectional Semifinal, Friday, hosted by Tufts.
The Knights (25-5) couldn't overcome a first-half that saw the hot-shooting Devils (29-1) connect on 10-of-19 three-pointers while committing 15 turnovers to fall behind, 48-20. The Knights out-scored FDU-Florham 19-5 to start the second half and got as close as 10 down the stretch, but Geneseo saw its 19-game winning streak come to an end in its first appearance in the NCAA round-of-16 in 20 years.
FDU-Florham scored the first eight points of the game before the Knights used an 11-7 run capped by a McGinnis lay-up to pull within four, 15-11, with 12:44 on the first-half clock.
FDU-Florham responded with an 11-2 spurt before a jumper by junior forward Allison McKenna from the top of the key made it an 11-point deficit, 26-15, at 8:50. The Devils scored 13-unanswered points to build a 39-15 lead with 4:10 remaining in the half that was 20 at halftime.
Trailing, 53-26, early in the second half, a tough lay-up by senior guard Biz Reinhardt at 16:26 started a 20-6 Geneseo run over the next 10 minutes that included nine points from McGinnis as the Knights cut the Devils' lead to 13, 59-46, with 6:10 to play.
FDU-Florham broke its scoring drought connecting on the back end of a trip to the free throw line at 5:43, before senior guard Dana Cohan converted three-of-four free throws in back-to-back trips to the foul line that made it a 10-point game, 60-50, with 4:09 left in regulation.
The Devils hit two more free throws at 2:12 before a McKenna jumper made the score, 62-52, with 1:56 left in regulation. FDU-Florham connected on 6-of-8 free throws in the final 1:23 as the Knights comeback bid ran out of time.
McKenna finished the game with 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
