Women's Basketball Holds On To Defeat Plattsburgh, 55-52

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Allison McKenna totaled 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Knights to a 55-52 victory at Plattsburgh in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), Saturday.

Senior forward Shannon McGinnis had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season while junior guard Dana Cohan scored 11 points in the team's 15th-straight win.

The top-seeded Knights will play the winner of No. 4 Oneonta and No. 5 Plattsburgh in the second semifinal game next Friday, scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. in Schrader Gymnasium. The tournament final will be played the following Saturday at 4 p.m.

"Today, we faced a very good Plattsburgh, on their senior day, who had a lot riding on the outcome and we reached deep to grab one more conference win. The team really battled, especially in the second half. Doing what this group did through the SUNYAC regular season isn't easy and I'm very proud of them for what they've accomplished," said head coach Scott Hemer. "Meeting your goals throughout the season only gets more difficult down the stretch yet we still found ways to get our first one - the opportunity to host the tournament. All we can do now is keep working and grinding every day to make steps forward."

Geneseo (21-4, 17-1 SUNYAC) held an early 12-4 lead with 16:19 on the clock after Cohan made a three on back-to-back possessions. Just under four minutes later, senior forward Katie Peterson hit a jumper to make it 14-9 at 12:34.

Leading 20-16 at 6:56 after another jumper from Peterson, the Cardinals (12-13, 9-9 SUNYAC) went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-20 lead with 4:15 on the clock. The hosts made a lay-up in the final seconds to remain ahead by four at halftime, 26-22.

The Knights opened the second half with a 7-2 spurt to take a one-point lead, 29-28, at 16:33. With 14:25 remaining in the game, McKenna made a lay-up to give Geneseo a 34-29 lead.

At 9:25, McKenna completed a three-point play to make it a 41-34 game. However, Plattsburgh senior guard Brittany Marshall hit a shot from long-range to cut the deficit to one, 45-44, at 5:56.

With 2:46 on the clock, Cardinals senior guard Misha Green made a free-throw to tie the game at 49. Following a lay-up by McKenna, Green made a three-pointer to give Plattsburgh the lead, 52-51.

With 53 seconds to play, McKenna hit a jumper from the foul-line off an in-bounds pass to put the Knights up, 53-52. After a Cardinals turnover, Cohan made a shot from just inside the arc to give the team a three-point advantage which held for the rest of the game.
