Men's Basketball Falls To Oswego, 76-64

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward James McKenna scored 21 points while senior forward Gordon Lyons added 18 points and nine rebounds, but it was visiting Oswego out-shooting the Knights, 76-64, to snap their five-game winning streak, Tuesday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball.

"Oswego got hot from long-range, despite the adjustments we made to slow them down," said head coach Steve Minton. "Our defensive transition also was a step behind one too many times as they were able to beat us on several occasions for easy lay-ups."

After a Lyons three-pointer tied the game at 12 with 14:46 on the clock, Oswego used a 12-3 spurt capped by a lay-up from sophomore guard Brian Sortino to take a 24-15 lead at 9:27. However, the Knights finished the half out-scoring the Lakers, 14-6, to head to the locker room only trailing one, 30-29.

The Knights scored on their first two possessions of the second half to take a 33-30 lead at 19:00 but Lakers' junior guard Walter Sampson scored the next six points to give the visitors a 36-33 advantage with 17:27 to play.

At 12:45, first-year guard Connor Murphy made a shot from beyond the arc to keep Geneseo within three, 43-40. With 6:39 on the clock, Oswego hit one of its 10 threes on the night to take its largest lead of the game, 64-50.

At the 2:51 mark, a lay-up by junior guard Kevin Zabransky cut the Knights' deficit to nine, 70-61, but that's as close as they came down the stretch. The Lakers (16-8, 12-5 SUNYAC) converted 6-6 free-throws in the final two minutes to pull away for the victory.

Geneseo (14-9, 10-6 SUNYAC) hits the road to face Potsdam Friday at 5:30 p.m. before playing their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Plattsburgh at 2 p.m.
