Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Allison McKenna scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Knights to their 13th-consecutive victory as the team defeated visiting Oswego, 72-59, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, Tuesday.
With the win, Geneseo clinched the number one overall seed and a first-round bye for the SUNYAC Tournament. The Knights will host the semifinals and finals on February 27th and 28th, respectively, with exact game times to be announced.
"I'm happy we were able to reach one of our goals set at the beginning of the season and host the conference tournament on our home court," said head coach Scott Hemer. "We've reached the finals the last two seasons but had to go through someone else's gym so clinching the top seed is exciting for us. While I'm happy we've reached this goal, I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead."
Senior forward Shannon McGinnis totaled 13 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season while sophomore guard Kara Houppert added 11 points in the win.
At the 14:19 mark, Lakers' first-year forward Rachael Windhausen made a lay-up to give the visitors an early seven-point lead, 11-4. Trailing, 16-9, at 11:49, Geneseo went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 16 with 10:04 remaining in the first half. The run was capped by a lay-up from senior forward Lea Sobieraski, who finished the night with six points and five rebounds.
Tied, 18-18, at 7:48, the Knights had an 8-0 spurt to build a 26-18 lead with 4:46 on the clock. With 32 seconds to go, McGinnis converted a three-point play to give the team a 33-23 lead at halftime.
Ahead, 36-26, a minute into the second half, Geneseo went on a 12-1 run that was capped by a three-pointer from junior guard Dana Cohan to go up, 48-27, at 15:25. With 12:49 remaining, senior center Katie Peterson made a lay-up to make it a 53-34 game. Peterson had nine points in the win.
Oswego (8-16, 6-11 SUNYAC) came within 12, 71-59 with just under two minutes on the clock but were unable to come any closer as Geneseo came away with the victory.
The Knights (19-4, 15-1 SUNYAC) hit the road to face Potsdam Friday at 7:30 p.m. before playing their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Plattsburgh at 4 p.m.
