Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneso junior defenseman Nate Brown scored a goal in the first period, but it was No. 2 Oswego bouncing back with two power play goals early in the second period to earn the 2-1 victory, Saturday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey.
Geneseo (11-9-3, 8-6-0 SUNYAC) got on the board after Brown took a cross-ice pass from junior defenseman Matt Solomon at the top of the left faceoff circle and scored on a slap shot into the top right corner of the Oswego goal with 5:07 on the first period clock.
The Lakers (17-2-3, 12-1-1 SUNYAC) scored two power play goals 1:14 apart to take a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Geneseo was whistled for a hooking penalty at 16:56 before a high-sticking penalty at 15:31 put the Knights down two skaters. Alex Botten converted the 5-on-3 opportunity after scoring on a shot from just outside the right post off a pass from Bobby Gertsakis at 15:19 for the Lakers' first tally.
Kenny Neill was then credited with what proved to be the game-winner 1:14 later after his back-handed pass from just outside the right post in front of the net deflected off a Geneseo defender's skate and passed Knights' senior goalie Nick Horrigan at 14:05.
Geneseo, which entered the night with one of the nation's top penalty-killing units (87.0%) gave up two power-play goals for only the third time this season.
Horrigan was credited with 30 saves for his ninth game of the season notching at least 30 stops as Oswego out-shot the Knights 32-20.
Geneseo closes the regular season on the road next weekend with games at Fredonia on Friday and Buffalo State on Saturday. Both games are slated for 7:00 p.m. face-offs.
