Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Justin Scharfe scored two goals and an assist while senior forward Ryan Stanimir was credited with three assists to lead the Knights to a 5-3 victory over Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey, Friday night.
Nine members of the squad were honored in a post-game Senior Day ceremony, including seniors Scharfe, Stanimir, Tyler Brickler, Jack Caradonna, Zach Cavallini, Bryan Haude, Nick Horrigan, Zach Martin and junior Devon Rice.
The teams combined for four goals in the first eight minutes of the game as Geneseo led, 3-1, at the first intermission. Sophomore forward Stephen Collins cashed in assists by Brickler and Stanimir 1:07 into the game, before Cortland answered with a short-handed tally 24 second later by Nick Zappia. Scharfe scored back-to-back goals with 16:56 and 12:31 on the clock to give Geneseo the two-goal edge.
Junior forward Ryan Donnelly made it a three goal-Knights' edge with 4:50 on the second-period clock, before Brickler made it a 5-1 game with 15:21 remaining in the third period.
Cortland notched goals by Darren McCormick and Dan Broderick in a 22-second span to pull within two with 12:26 remaining in regulation, but the Knights shut down the come-back bid to earn the victory.
In goal, Horrigan was credited with nine saves in 43:59 of work, before giving way to Haude, who also notched nine saves in the final 16:01 of the night.
Geneseo closes out the home portion of the regular-season slate on Saturday, hosting Oswego at 7:00 p.m.
