Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward David Ripple scored the game-winning goal with 2:06 left in regulation to lead the No. 12/14 Knights to the 5-4 upset of No. 1/1 Plattsburgh, Saturday night, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey action.
Junior centerman Jack Ceglarski won a draw in the right face-off circle of the Plattsburgh zone directly behind him to Ripple, who took a shot that rose through a crowd at found the back of the net for the deciding tally as Geneseo (7-1-2, 4-2-1 SUNYAC) handed the Cardinals (8-1-1, 5-1-1 SUNYAC) their first loss of the season.
The Knights struck with the only goal of the first period, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity following a pair of Plattsburgh hooking penalties as sophomore defenseman Pat Condon one-timed a shot in the low slot off a pass from junior forward Stephen Collins with 9:40 on the clock.
The second period was a different story as the teams combined for four goals in the first five minutes of action. Genseo first-year forward Anthony Marra scored on a hard wrist shot into the top-right corner of the Plattsburgh goal from close range with 1:44 elapsed before senior forward Connor Gorman stuffed a quick shot inside the left post of the Knights' cage 27 seconds later.
The Cardinals evened the score, 2-2, a minute later with a power-play goal after first-year forward Pat Egan scored off a nice cross in front of the Geneseo crease into a wide open right post.
However, the Knights quickly regained the lead as junior forward Connor Anthoine scored off a Ripple assist to make it a 3-2 contest with 15:47 remaining in the second period.
Plattsburgh tied the score with 12:48 remaining in the third period on a tally by senior forward Michael Radisa, but Geneseo once again had a quick answer 33 seconds later. Senior forward Ryan Donnelly dumped a pass from the right faceoff circle in front of the Cardinal crease where senior forward AJ Sgaraglio knocked the loose puck past senior goalie Spencer Finney to make it a 4-3 Geneseo lead.
First-year forward Cam Owens tallied a goal with 8:40 on the clock as Plattsburgh scored its second extra-man goal of the night to knot the score, 4-4, setting up the winning tally by Ripple.
Geneseo first-year goalie Devin McDonald was credited with 27 saves to improve to 6-0-1 on his rookie campaign, while Finney totaled 34 stops on the night.
The Knights made their first appearance of the season earlier in the week in both national polls, appearing No. 12 in the d3hockey.com rankings and No. 14 in the USCHO.com poll, while Plattsburgh moved up to the top spot in both listings.
Geneseo closes out the semester next Friday (Dec. 11) hosting Nazareth at 7:00 p.m. in non-league play.
