Hills Hat-Trick Leads 7-4 Men's Ice Hockey Win Over Canton

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Genseo junior forward Trevor Hills scored three goals and added two assists while junior forward Stephen Collins totaled two goals and four assists to lead the Knights to a 7-4 victory over visiting Canton, Friday night.

Tied, 4-4, after two periods, Hills and Collins each scored a goal as Geneseo (1-0-2) tallied three-straight times to pull away from the Kangaroos (1-2-0).

The teams traded two goals apiece to finish the first period knotted, 2-2. Collins opened the scoring at 15:44 after taking a cross from Hills on the Canton crease and scoring with a shot inside the right post. The Kangaroos answered just over a minute later after first-year forward Nick Lepone finished off an odd-man rush with a quick shot past Knights' junior goalie Matt Leon.

With the Knights on the power play following a Canton interference call, Hills tipped a shot from the point by Collins between Erickson's pads at 12:26 for his first goal of the evening. Just over seven minutes later with the teams skating 4-on-4, first-year defender Dylan Rosen scored on a shot inside the right circle off a feed from behind the Knights' net to even the score after 20 minutes of play.

Geneseo first-year forward Arthur Gordon snapped a hard wrist shot from the left faceoff circle past Erickson to put the Knights up, 3-2, with 15:37 on the second period clock, but the Kangaroos answered with two goals in a four-minute stretch to take the lead, 4-3. Lepone collected a rebound in front of Leon and stuffed a short shot inside the right post at 14:35 before junior forward Eric Witzel converted a power-play goal with a close-range shot after a nice cross-ice feed from sophomore forward Josh Sova at 10:35.

The Knights drew even with 4:05 left in the period after a hard shot from the top of the slot by Collins deflected straight down into the crease behind Erickson where Hills tapped it across the line.

Geneseo started to pull away as Hills one-timed a cross inside the right post for a short-handed goal with 16:17 on the third-period clock. Collins later made Canton pay for a hooking penalty, scoring on a slap shot from the point just as power-play clock expired to make it a two-goal cushion with 8:56 remaining in regulation.

First-year forward Anthony Marra collected three assists to go along with his first collegiate goal on a nice shot in the upper-right corner of the Kangaroo net with 5:36 remaining in regulation for the three-goal final margin.

Erickson was credited with 34 saves as Geneseo out-shot Canton by a 41-25 margin. Knights' first-year goalie Devin McDonald picked up his first collegiate victory, saving all 11 shots he faced in the final 30:35 of the contest.

The two teams will face each other again on Saturday at Wilson Ice Arena, with action set to start at 7:00 p.m.
