Field Hockey Falls In SUNYAC Semis, 2-1, At New Paltz

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore midfielder Diana Ruggiero scored a first-half goal, but it was second-seeded New Paltz tallying two goals during a three-minute stretch of the second half to earn the 2-1 victory over the third-seeded Knights in the semifinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Field Hockey Tournament, Wednesday.

Making its sixth-consecutive appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament, it was the third-straight season Geneseo (10-9) was eliminated by New Paltz after falling, 3-1, in the 2013 semifinals and, 2-1, in last season's championship game.

The Knights converted a penalty corner in the 33rd minute to get on the board first as sophomore midfielder Morgan Maley inserted a pass to senior defender Elena Hingston that Ruggiero converted for her third goal of the season.

New Paltz got on the board in the 54th minute after Colleen Roemer scored in traffic before Jessica Caruana converted a penalty stroke in the 56th minute the proved to be the game-winner.

Geneseo senior Dayna Mercer was credited with 14 saves in her final collegiate appearance for the Knights, finishing as the only player in program history to eclipse the 400-save plateau with 474 over the last four seasons.
