Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward David Ripple scored two goals while junior forward Stephen Collins notched the game-winning tally to lead the Knights to a 4-2 victory over Brockport, Friday night, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey action.
Geneseo (3-0-2, 1-0-2 SUNYAC) got on the board first as sophomore forward Sotiris Athanasopoulos finished off a rebound inside the left post after grabbing a loose puck off a pad save by Golden Eagle senior goalie Jared Lockhurst with 9:35 on the clock. Brockport answered 26 seconds later after first-year centerman Tim Kielich beat Geneseo first-year goalie Devin McDonald on a 1-on-1 rush with a backhanded flip into the top-right corner of the goal to even the game, 1-1.
With 20 seconds on the clock, Ripple tallied his first goal on a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle to stake the Knights to a one-goal edge after 20 minutes of play.
Brockport (2-3-0, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) drew even with the only goal of the second period. Sophomore forward Ryan Kangas stole a pass in the Geneseo zone and roofed a shot from the left faceoff dot with 6:57 on the clock.
Geneseo scored two-unanswered goals in the third period to seal the win. Collins took a pass in the right slot from junior forward Trevor Hills and scored a crossing shot with 9:58 remaining. With 2:55 left in regulation, Ripple scored on a short shot through a crowd in front of the Brockport crease for his second of the night to close the scoring.
Lockhurst was credited with 45 saves as Geneseo out-shot the Golden Eagles, 49-25. McDonald totaled 23 saves to improve to 3-0-2 on the season.
The game was a rematch of last season's SUNYAC Tournament Quarterfinal that saw sixth-seeded Brockport upend the third-seeded and host Knights, 6-4. The victory was also the Knights' 60th victory in 85 meetings all-time between the two teams.
Geneseo returns to action next Friday night, hosting conference-rival Buffalo State at 7:00 p.m.
