Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Ryan Donnelly, junior forward RJ Burns and sophomore forward Trevor Hills each scored a goal, but it was No. 6 Oswego making up a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 draw in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey, Friday night. It was the season-opener for both squads.
Geneseo (0-0-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) junior goalie Matt Leon was credited with a career-high 36 saves on the evening, including 14 in the second period, as the Lakers (0-0-1, 0-0-1 SUNYAC) out-shot the Knights, 39-28.
Oswego got on the board in the third minute of play after junior forward Joey Davies jammed home a lose puck on a delayed Knights penalty during a scramble in front of Leon for the early lead. The Knights bounced right back less than a minute later as Donnelly took a long feed from junior defenseman Derek Stahl down the right wing and tipped a close-range shot between Lakers goalie Matt Zawadzki's pads to finish off the short-handed, one-on-one break.
Seven minutes into the second period, it was Burns collecting his own rebound off a Zawadzki save during an odd-man rush and scoring inside the left post. Oswego was whistled for a hooking penalty during the play and it was Hills cashing in a power-play goal during a scrum in front of the Lakers' net 1:38 later to stake the Knights to the 3-1 lead with 11:22 on the clock.
Oswego got one back to pull within one before the end of the period. Junior forward Alex Botten scored on a hard shot from the point that tipped off a Geneseo defender's skate and past Leon with 7:39 on the clock.
The Lakers tied the game with 3:11 left in regulation with some strong passing in transition as junior forward Shawn Hulshof took a feed from center ice down the right wing and out-skated a Knights' defender to beat Leon for the equalizer.
Zawadzki totaled 25 saves, including 12 in the second period to preserve the tie.
Geneseo hits the road on Saturday to take on SUNYAC-rival Cortland at 7:00 p.m.
