Field Hockey Falls To Cortland, 2-1, On Late Goals

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Diana Ruggiero scored a goal in the third minute of regulation, but it was visiting Cortland scoring twice in the final three minutes of regulation to earn the 2-1 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey play, Friday.

Ruggiero converted during an early penalty corner attempt, scoring with a high shot into the left corner of the Cortland 10-3, 5-0 SUNYAC) goal off a feed from senior defender Elena Hingston to put the home team up, 1-0, with 32:47 showing on the clock.

The score remained that way until late in the second half when Red Dragon senior midfielder Sara O'Brien scored the equalizer on a shot from the top of the circle that made its way through traffic in front of the Geneseo (7-7, 3-2 SUNYAC) cage with 2:56 showing on the clock.

With 29 seconds left, it was senior midfielder Jillian Vogl intercepting a Geneseo clearing attempt during a Red Dragon penalty corner and scoring from the top of the cirlce for the go-ahead goal.

Geneseo returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Houghton at 7:00 p.m.
