Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward David Ripple and sophomore forward Stephen Collins each tallied a goal, but it was visiting Elmira holding on for the 3-2 victory, Friday night, at Wilson Ice Arena.
The Knights (6-5-2) got on the board first after Collins took control of a loose puck at the top of the Geneseo zone and fed senior forward Tyler Brickler at center ice. Brickler dropped a perfect return pass in front of a streaking Collins, who skated in on net and beat Elmira goalie Sal Magliocco with a short shot between his pads with 7:02 on the first-period clock.
A back-and-forth second period nearly finished scoreless, but the Soaring Eagles took advantage of a Geneseo boarding penalty at 2:16 with a power-play goal by Alexander Taulien with 55 seconds on the clock. The Elmira power play cycled the puck around the top of the zone to Taulien, who blasted a one-timer from the top of the left face-off circle past Geneseo goalie Nick Horrigan to knot the game, 1-1.
The Knights started the third period on the power play after Elmira was assessed an elbowing penalty with 34 second left in the second. However, Elmira winger Andrew Ciampichini intercepted a bad Geneseo pass inside the Knights' blue line and broke the lenght of the ice on his way to slipping a short-handed goal inside the right post that put the visitors up, 2-1, with 19:32 on the clock.
Elmira (6-4-2) made it a two-goal edge after Jarryd ten Vaanh tipped a shot past Horrigan inside the right post from close range with 9:33 left in the third period. With just under three minutes to play in regulation, the Knights pulled Horrigan for an extra skater after Soaring Eagles were whistled for an interference call. Geneseo converted the 6-on-4 opportunity after Ripple buried a rebound from close range with 1:58 to play, but it wasn't enough as Elmira staved off the Knights' comeback bid.
Horrigan was credited with 33 saves to mark his seventh outing of the season with over 30 stops, while Magliocco registered 32 saves to earn the win.
Geneseo returns to action on Saturday, hosting Hobart for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.
