Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season to lead the Knights over No. 24 Cortland, 50-41, Tuesday. The loss marked the Red Dragon's first in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.
Junior forward Allison McKenna recorded 12 points and six rebounds in her first game back after missing the last three with an ankle injury while sophomore guard Katie Durand had seven points and sophomore guard Kara Houppert added six.
"We've been piecing things together as players recover from injuries so we really just tried to focus on things we could control and that was defense and rebounding," said head coach Scott Hemer. "We didn't shoot the ball well but we did well in those two areas and that's how we were able to come away with the win. The team focused on their assignments and got the job done. Having Allison (McKenna) return tonight was key to our victory because we're a team and any time we get one player back we take one step forward."
With 8:23 on the clock, McGinnis hit a shot from beyond the arc to put Geneseo up 16-11 but just over four minutes later, Cortland made a lay-up to tie the game, 18-18.
The Knights responded by going on a 6-0 run to enter halftime with a 24-18 advantage.
With 12:32 remaining in second half, McGinnis hit another three-pointer to give Geneseo its largest lead of the game, 36-24.
At 5:33, the Red Dragons made a jump shot to cut the deficit to four, 42-38, but the Knights scored eight-straight points, including six free-throws, to seal the victory.
Geneseo held Cortland (9-2, 4-1 SUNYAC) to its fewest point total of the season by 17 points as the team out-rebounded the Red Dragons, 44-34. The Knights also did not allow a double-digit scorer, including holding the SUNYAC's leader in points per game, Brittney Dumas, to only seven points on the night.
Geneseo (7-4, 3-1 SUNYAC) continues its three-game homestand this Friday against Fredonia at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming Buffalo State to town on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
