Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Emma Dempsey scored two goals and two assists to lead the field hockey team to a 7-2 victory at Morrisville in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener, Saturday.
The Knights (3-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) jumped out to a 4-0 first-half lead to put the game out of reach two earn their second win in three outings.
Dempsey scored on a drive from the the top of the circle on a penalty corner to open the scoring in the sixth minute. First-year forward Cara Stafford scored the first of her two goals of the half after tipping home a shot during a scramble in front of the Mustang net in the seventh minute.
Dempsey made it a 3-0 Geneseo lead after making a move to get open on the left corner of the goal and score from close range in the 10th minute. Stafford got open for a shot after making a nice move to evade the Morrisville defense and scored with under a minute remaining in the first half to give the visitors a four-goal cushion heading into intermission.
Morrisville (1-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) quickly opened the second half with a tally 1:35 into the period, but Geneseo would bounce back with a 3-0 spurt over the next six minutes to take command. Senior defender Ashley Favata tipped home a Dempsey drive on a penalty corner in the 38th minute, before junior forward Kailey Suhr tipped home a goal off a Favata pass less than a minute later. Junior forward Sarah Malinak finished off a scramble from close range in the 40th minute to post the Knights to a 7-1 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Morrisville would add the game's final goal in the 67th minute to close out the scoring.
Geneseo returns to action next Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at Rensselaer.
