Men's Soccer Scores Four Unanswered Goals To Defeat Alfred, 4-2

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Stanley Egbuchulam scored the go-ahead goal, his first of the season, and tallied an assist to lead the Knights past Alfred, 4-2, Wednesday.

"Today, our bench players really changed the game for us. They stepped up, won 50-50 balls and led us to the win," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "Once our bench players began dictating the offense, Alfred wasn't able to get back in the game. The second unit really made all the difference today."

Alfred struck first in the 18th minute when senior forward Jeff Thomas, stationed at the top of the box, scored into the top right corner of the net off a pass from senior forward Omar Mohamed. The Saxons scored again eleven minutes later after sophomore back James Piombino controlled sophomore midfielder Richard Lander's free kick in the box and tapped it by junior keeper Logan Calvey into the right side of the goal.

The Knights responded in the 36th minute when sophomore forward Mike Skrzypczyk scored over junior keeper Matthew Unick after senior back Tyler Chauncey played him a beautiful ball up the middle of the field and into the box.

Trailing 2-1 in the second half, senior forward Richard Bellusci beat a defender in the box and hit the ball off the right goal post into the net for the equalizer in the 48th minute.

Geneseo took the lead in the 59th minute when Egbuchulam flicked the ball over the keeper after receiving it through the middle of the field from first-year back Kevin McGrath during a counter-attack. With the lead, the Knights never looked back and prevented Alfred from getting any solid looks on goal.

In the 73rd minute, junior forward Jesse Levy put Geneseo up 4-2 when he headed the ball past the keeper into the right side of the net after senior midfielder Neil Allen's free kick entered the box and Egbuchulam headed it towards Levy.

Calvey recorded three saves in the win as the team outshot Alfred, 25-6.

The Knights return to action this Saturday as part of a men's and women's soccer double-header. The men kick-off at 12 p.m. opposite Hobart followed by a women's match-up with St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
