BROCKPORT, N.Y. - SUNY Genseo junior forward Kailey Suhr and sophomore defender Liz Doherty each tallied their first goal of the season to lead the field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Vassar, Saturday afternoon, in a game played at SUNY Brockport's Bob Boozer Field. 

The Knights (2-4) handed the previously undefeated Brewers (5-1) their first loss of the season while snapping a three-game skid of their own.

"I'm really proud of the way we came out and played hard from the opening whistle," said head coch Jess Seren. "Vassar was a quality opponent and it took a complete team effort to come away with the win today."

Geneseo got on the board first following a penalty corner attempt. Suhr sent the ball off the endline to outside the top of the circle where senior defender Cathryn Menarchem played a long pass back on to goal. Vassar goalie Amreen Bhasin deflected the ball off her pad, but Doherty was there to collect the rebound and score from close range in the 16th minute. 

The Knights took a 2-0 lead nine minutes later after junor forward Sarah Malinak sent a long cross from the right side across the Vassar goal mouth that made it through traffic to Suhr, who scored inside the left post from close range.

Vassar scored the lone goal of the second half following a penalty corner attempt nine minutes into the period to make it a one-goal game. Enya Cunningham controled a loose ball and flicked a goal behind Geneseo junior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer for the Brewers' only tally of the day. 

Both teams finished the game with 10 shots apiece, while Mercer was credited with three saves to earn the victory. 

Geneseo returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Utica for a 5:00 p.m. face-off.
