Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Laurie Knapp scored her first goal of the year to lead the Knights to a 2-0 win at Alfred and their fifth-straight victory to open the season, Friday.
"While we did a great job of maintaining possession today, we still feel like we didn't play our best game," said head coach Nate Wiley. "However, it's nice to know that even when we're not firing on all cylinders, we can still come out with a win."
Geneseo controlled play for much of the first half and kept the ball away from the Saxons' end of the field. In the 16th minute, senior forward Jori Semrau settled the ball in the box and found the back of the net for her second goal of the year.
The Knights strung together multiple offensive opportunities in the second half but it wasn't until the 61st minute when Knapp curved the ball around the keeper that Geneseo got back on the board.
Defensively, Geneseo was strong once again as senior keeper Allison Stamp did not have to make a single save to garner her fourth shutout of the season. The Knights outshot Alfred, 26-0, as six players tallied two or more shots.
"Our defense today was created by our team's ability to possess the ball. We didn't allow Alfred to get a touch or get across midfield very often, preventing them from getting any sort of shot on goal," said Wiley.
The 23rd ranked Knights aim to keep their unbeaten streak alive when they return to action Saturday at home against Houghton at 1 p.m.
