Field Hockey Comes Up Short At No. 14 William Smith, 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team fell at No. 14 William Smith, 4-0, Wednesday evening. The Knights (1-4) were playing their third nationally-ranked opponent in five matches to start the 2014 campaign.

The teams played the first 20 minutes of the first half scoreless, before the Herons (2-1) netted three goals in the next 13 minutes to take the 3-0 edge into halftime.

Out-shot 15-1 in the first half, the Geneseo defense held their hosts to only four shots in the second half, including the lone goal of the second half in the 59th minute.

William Smith would finish the game with a 21-5 advantage in shots, while Knights junior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer was credited with six saves on the evening. 

Geneseo returns to action on Saturday, taking on Vassar at 1:00 p.m. in a match to be played at Boozer Field at SUNY Brockport.
