Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo first-year back Leah Greene recorded a goal and an assist in her first collegiate match to lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory over Baldwin Wallace in the first day of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament, Saturday.
"All of our attack players gave Baldwin Wallace a difficult time and Leah did a great job off the bench in her first game," said head coach Nate Wiley. "She was dynamic, making it hard for the defenders to mark her. Defensively, we were organized and did well with the new system we adopted this preseason. Our three backs knocked down balls well and prevented their forwards from getting anything going offensively."
The Knights strung together four shots in a matter of five minutes late in the first period but it wasn't until the 45th minute that Greene hit a sliding shot from the 12-yard line that reached the back of the net through the lower left corner. Sophomore midfielder Carolanne Murphy was credited with the assist.
Geneseo got on the board once more when senior midfielder/forward Jori Semrau capitalized on a pass from Greene by hitting a floating shot as the goalkeeper came off her line in the 67th minute.
The Yellow Jackets struggled to find their stride as the Knights defense held them to only two shots and one corner kick, allowing senior goalkeeper Allison Stamp to see only one shot on goal in a complete game. Geneseo tallied 19 shots, eight of which came from junior forward Kelsey Raschke.
"Kelsey had a tremendous game for us up front and unfortunately didn't get rewarded with any points but she played a great match," said Wiley.
Geneseo returns to action Sunday, taking on Oberlin at 12:00 p.m. in second-round action in Erie, Pennsylvania.
