WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Emma Dempsey scored the game-winning goal 12:48 into overtime to lift the Knights to a 3-2 win over Union in the consolation game of the Colonel Classic, hosted by Wilkes, Saturday.

It was Dempsey's first goal of her college career. First-year forward Cara Stafford also tallied her first two collegiate goals in the Knights' first win of the season.

After a scoreless first half, the two teams alternated marks throughout the second. Stafford put the Knights on the board in the 39th minute. Union (0-2) equalized the score five minutes later with a tip-in by Allison Troy.

Geneseo (1-1) followed up in the 52nd minute as Stafford collected her second goal of the day, assisted by junior forward Sarah Malinak. Six minutes later, Union converted a penalty stroke to even the score again.

Locked at 2-2 in the last minutes of overtime, Dempsey took an assist from Malinak to secure the win in the 83rd minute.

Junior goalie Dayna Mercer collected two saves in the victory.

Geneseo returns to action with a road match at Hamilton on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Faceoff is set for 5:00 p.m..
