Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore winger David Ripple scored two goals and an assist but it was Oswego pulling out a 7-6 victory over the Knights in the championship game of the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Ice Hockey Tournament at Wilson Ice Arena.
First-year forward Alex Botten was named the tournament MVP after tallying a goal and five assists as the Lakers won their second-straight SUNYAC title.
Trailing, 5-1, with less than two minutes remaining in the second period, Geneseo (21-6) scored four unanswered goals to tie the game, 5-5, with 14:37 left in the third period. Oswego would re-take the lead with a tally with 11:30 on the clock, but Geneseo answered back with the equalizer with 5:44 remaining.
Following a Geneseo roughing penalty, Oswego (20-6-2) first-year forward Shawn Hulshof netted the game-winner with 28.7 seconds remaining to propel the Lakers to the victory and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Junior defenseman Jack Caradonna scored a goal and added two assists, and joined senior forward Zachary Vit on the all-tournament team for Geneseo.
Oswego got on the board 24 seconds in the game as junior forward Chris Carr collected a deflected shot off Knights' sophomore goalkeeper Nick Horrigan's pad and scored from close range for the early Laker lead.
Oswego went up 2-0 with a power-play tally at 11:17 following a Knights' charging penalty. Botten won a faceoff in the left circle directly to the point that first-year forward Matt Galati shot into the lower left side of the goal off Horrigan's pad.
Following an Oswego goalie interference penalty, Geneseo got on the board with a power-play tally of its own at 16:29. Camped out in front of Oswego first-year goalie Matt Zawadzki, Ripple tipped home a shot from the point by Vit to make it a 2-1 game.
Oswego took a 5-1 lead with three unanswered tallies in the second period. Junior defenseman Bobby Gertsakis intercepted a Geneseo clearing attempt inside the blue line and sent a shot on goal that first-year forward Josh Timpano tipped in from close range with 4:40 elapsed. Carr took a perfect pass by sophomore defenseman Denton King from inside the Oswego zone at the opposite blue line and broke in alone to flip a shot into the top right corner of the net with 10:08 on the clock. Galati scored his second goal on a shot from the left corner on a rebound after Horrigan made the initial save to build a four-goal cushion with 6:55 remaining in the period.
Geneseo scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the period to pull back within two. Junior forward Tyler Brickler stung a drop pass by junior forward Justin Scharfe at the top of the slot past Zawadzki at 18:50, before Vit received a pass from behind the goal from Ripple in the low slot and scored into the top-right corner of the goal with 13 seconds on the clock for the 5-3 score at the second intermission. It was the 50th goal of Vit's career in a Knights' uniform.
Geneseo tied the game with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the third period. First-year forward Jack Ceglarski jammed home a Geneseo power-play tally after a scramble in front of the Oswego net at 16:13, before Ripple scored from close range off a deflection after a shot by Caradonna from the top of the right faceoff circle caromed off Zawadzki at 14:37.
Oswego re-took the lead as Botten scored on a high wrist shot from just over the blue line on the right side at 9:30, but Caradonna would tie the score back up, 6-6, after zipping a shot into the top-right corner of the net from the top of the point with 5:30 on the clock.
Hulshof snapped home a deflection from the low slot with 28.7 showing on the clock for the victory.
Geneseo was hosting their first SUNYAC Championship game since winning back-to-back titles at home in 2005 and 2006.
