Women's Basketball Survives Fredonia In SUNYAC Tournament Opener, 55-52

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore guard Dana Cohan hit back-to-back three pointers in the final 38 seconds, including the game-winner with :01 on the clock, to lead the Knights to a 55-52 victory over Fredonia in the first round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, Tuesday.

Sophomore center Allison McKenna totaled 14 points and nine rebounds while junior forward Shannon McGinnis added 11 points and eight rebounds for the third-seeded Knights, which advance to play second-seeded Buffalo State on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the semifinals, hosted by Plattsburgh.

Geneseo improved to 20-6 with the victory and clinched their third 20-win season in the last four years.

"This time of year, it is all about keeping yourself in games and giving yourself a chance to win at the end," said head coach Scott Hemer. "We did that against a very good team tonight and that is the sign of growth for our team. That is what we've been preaching to this group all year - growth - and they are starting to get it."

Fredonia (15-10) would get out to a quick 10-4 lead at 14:38, but Geneseo would answer with an 8-2 run to knot that game, 12-12, three minutes later. A 9-2 Knights run capped by a McKenna jumper staked the home team to a 21-14 edge at 6:11, but the Blue Devils would answer right back to tie the game, 21-21 at 4:55.

A layup by first-year guard Katie Durand with 58 second on the clock gave Geneseo a 27-24 lead it would take into intermission as McKenna led all scorers with 11 points. Geneseo would lead by five on a jumper by first-year forward Bridgit Ryan, 35-30, with 16:38 on the second-half clock, but Fredonia would hang around to tie the game, 37-37, five-and-a-half minutes later.

Tied, 38-38, at 9:43, Fredonia look to take control of the game with a quick 7-0 spurt to lead, 45-38, at 7:27. A Ryan three-pointer helped cut Geneseo's deficit to one, 45-44, at 5:43, a layup by senior guard Becky Hebert followed by a three-point play by Sabrina Macaulay put the visitors back on top, 50-44, with 4:29 left in regulation.

McKenna would hit a big three-pointer at 4:17, before McGinnis hit a pair of free throws at 3:05 to pull the Knights within one, 50-49, but Fredonia would answer with a jumper by Jamie Curry to build the lead back to three, 52-49, with 2:32 on the clock.

Geneseo would come away empty handed on its next two possessions, but Fredonia couldn't convert on two trips to the free-throw line, missing the front end of a 1-and-1 on both occasions. Following a timeout, Geneseo would take possession with 42 seconds on the clock.

Cohan would nail her first long-range strike at the top of the key to tie the game, 52-52, with 38 second left. Fredonia would miss a layup 17 second later and Cohan would grabbed the rebound and headed down the floor, where she would nail the winning shot from the top-left corner of the the three-point arc.

Fredonia would call timeout with 0.9 left on the clock. Hebert caught the long in-boud pass just outside the Blue Devils three point line and was able to get open for one last attempt, but the ball rattled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

McKenna became the program's career leader in blocks, notching the 116th of her career in the second half to break the mark of 115 she held with Melissa Graham '13.
