Women's Basketball Holds Down Fredonia, 66-57

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Shannon McGinnis scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Knights past host Fredonia, 66-57, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball action, Friday.

"Overall, it was one of our better efforts on the road this season," said head coach Scott Hemer. "We focused on the little things and the scoreboard took care of itself."

Geneseo got out of the gate quickly, taking a 12-3 lead on a jump shot by junior center Katie Peterson at 15:26 and never trailed. The Blue Devils would close to within two, 16-14, with 12:04 on the clock but a three-pointer by junior guard Biz Reinhardt would kick off a 9-0 Knights run that made it 25-14 at 9:40.

Fredonia would again answer with a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to tie the game, 30-30, at 4:01, but a Peterson jumper with 27 seconds left in the half staked the visitors to a 39-32 lead at intermission.

Geneseo would slowly pull away in the second half. Leading 49-45 at 13:35, the Knights would hold the Blue Devils scoreless for over eight minutes to build a 10-point lead, 57-47, at 7:23 and only allow 10 points the rest of the game.

Geneseo held Fredonia, which entered the night leading the SUNYAC in scoring at 71.3 points per game, over 14 points under its scoring average. Fredonia guard Becky Hebert, who entered the night leading the league with 23.0 points per game, was only able to muster 13 points.

Peterson finished the night with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, while first-year forward Bridgit Ryan added 10 points in the win. Sophomore center Allison McKenna was credited with eight points and a game-best nine rebounds.

Geneseo (14-6, 8-5 SUNYAC) will travel to Buffalo State on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off with the Bengals.
