Box Score HENRIETTA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for her fourth-straight double-double but it was St. John Fisher taking the 78-72 victory to capture third-place in the 22nd-Annual Wendy's College Classic, Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Dana Cohan added 17 points and five assists, while sophomore guard Kayleigh Cavanaugh contributed 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Leading, 13-7, at 13:36 in the first half, Cavanaugh hit a three-pointer and junior forward Allison McKenna made a lay-up to put the Knights up, 18-7, with 10:31 on the clock.
Tied at 23-23 with 6:53 remaining in the half, McGinnis scored eight-straight points to give Geneseo a 31-25 lead with just under four minutes to play. Two made free-throws by senior center Katie Peterson gave the Knights their largest lead of the game, 37-28, as the team entered halftime up, 37-32.
The teams traded baskets to start the second half as the Cardinals took a 51-50 lead at 11:12. The Knights regained the lead, 59-58, with 5:07 left to play after Cavanaugh hit a lay-up.
St. John Fisher hit two free-throws to go up, 66-63, with 2:54 on the clock as the team scored on their next three possessions to lead, 71-63, with a minute to play.
Cohan scored the final nine points for Geneseo but the Cardinals made their free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Knights return to action in January with four-straight road games, the first of which is Saturday, Jan. 3rd at Misericordia. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m.
