Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Rj Burns tallied a goal and an assist while senior goalie Nick Horrigan collected 31 saves as the Knight shutout visiting Fredonia, 3-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey play, Friday.
Geneseo (6-3-1, 5-3-0 SUNYAC) scored all three of its goals in the decisive third period to improve to 4-1-1 in its last six games.
The Knights finally broke the stalemate in the early minutes of the final period after junior defenseman Nate Brown brought the puck down the left boards into the offensive zone. Burns received a centering pass from the left face-off circle in the low slot and tucked what proved to be the deciding goal inside the right post with16:07 on the clock.
Geneseo made it a two-goal cushion with under six minutes to play in regulation. Senior forward Justin Scharfe carried the puck down the left boards and stopped inside the blue line to center a pass to Burns, who snapped a short shot on goal. Blue Devil goalie Jeff Flagler made the initial pad save, but sophomore forward Connor Anthoine collected the short rebound and scored from close range with 5:29 remaining in the game.
Fredonia (1-4-3, 0-3-0 SUNYAC) pulled Flagler for an extra skater with 1:09 to play, but Geneseo tacked on an empty-netter with 16 seconds remaining after sophomore forward Stephen Collins intercepted a Blue Devil pass from behind the Geneseo net and fed senior winger Zach Martin with a long centering pass that he cashed in from just over the blue line to seal the win.
Following Burns' goal, fans threw over 800 stuffed toys on the ice that were collected and donated to local charities as part of the team's fourth-annual Teddy Bear Toss.
The Knights will close out the semester on Saturday, hosting Buffalo State at 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Ice Arena.
