Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Leah Greene scored the game-winning goal with 59 seconds left in regulation to lead the No. 23 Knights to a 1-0 victory over Cortland to win the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Soccer Championship, Saturday.
"After a season full of hard work, it's a great feeling knowing we get to keep playing," said head coach Nate Wiley. "We were very resiliant today. With a couple missed opportunities early, we kept battling because we knew we were going to get some more. Leah is just a phenomenal athlete and if you put a enough balls in the box she's going to get on the end of something that nobody else can and that's what she did today. A lot of credit to Cortland. They played really well and gave us all that we could handle."
In a game where both defenses were able to limit many solid scoring chances, it was a play in the final minute of the game that clinched the victory. The Knights were awarded a free kick inside the Red Dragon penalty box after a defender was whistled for playing a ball while on the ground. Sophomore midfielder Emily Green flicked a cross to the left post, but it deflected off a Geneseo player toward the endline.
However, senior forward Jori Semrau made a nice play with her feet to save the ball from going out of bounds and slid a pass out to the top-left corner of the penalty box. Junior midfielder Stephanie Clookey was there to loft a perfect pass to the right post where Greene out-leapt Cortland sophomore goalkeeper Renee Walker and headed home the deciding goal. It was her SUNYAC-leading 13th tally of the season.
Senior keeper Allison Stamp recorded four saves to preserve her 12th shutout of the season as the Knights outshot the Red Dragons, 8-5.
The win clinched Geneseo's sixth-overall SUNYAC title and its first berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament since 2009. The tournament begins next Friday, Nov. 14th at campus sites to be determined.
The field for the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament will be announced Monday (Nov. 10) at 1:00 p.m. The selection show will be carried live on ncaa.com.
