Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds, scored 12 points and handed out four assists to lead the host Knights to a 64-47 victory over Juniata, Saturday afternoon.
"Our effort on the defensive end and our commitment to rebounding is what really drove our success today," said head coach Scott Hemer. "The girls came to play, competed for 40 minutes and when you do that, good things happen."
McGinnis scored her first points of the game on a lay-up with 12:31 on the clock to put Geneseo up 8-5. A few minutes later at 8:16, sophomore forward Katie Vienneau hit a lay-up to stretch the Knights' lead to four, 13-9. Vienneau finished with four points and two assists.
With 2:07 remaining in the first half, the Eagles sinked two foul shots to tie the game at 15-15. The Knights responded by going on a 6-2 run to enter halftime with a 21-17 lead.
Geneseo went on a 20-7 run to start the second half, taking a 41-24 lead with 13:09 on the clock. The run was capped by a three-pointer from McGinnis, giving the team its largest lead of the afternoon at 17.
With 9:05 left to play, sophomore guard Katie Durand made a lay-up to bring the Knights' lead back to 17, 50-33. Juniata would get within 13, 58-45, with just over two minutes to play but Geneseo would close the game out on a 6-2 run as senior center Katie Peterson hit a lay-up to give the team the 17-point victory. Peterson finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Kara Houppert contributed 11 points, two assists and two steals off the bench for the Knights.
Geneseo returns to action December 2nd for the first round of the Wendy's College Classic with times and locations still to be announced.
